At the dawn of the 20th century, Paul Marmottan, historian and an avid collector of Napoleon period pieces, founded his library in Boulogne.
Fascinated by the militaries and the many accomplishments of the Napoleonic administration, he collected its numerous publications and thus assembled a very rare collection of compilations, newspapers, and bulletins.
This private mansion with Imperial Epoch furniture was a place for rest and work. Paul Marmottan had a gallery built to house his collection of paintings and thousands of illuminations acquired during his lifetime.
Alongside the contributions of Boulogne-Billancourt city and the French department of Hauts de Seine, the French Academy of Fine Arts provided the library with a temporary exhibition room, a new reading room, and an auditorium.
